How Clayton Impact® Helps our Team Members Make a Difference

March 19, 2025

At Clayton, our purpose is opening doors to a better life. And as part of that purpose, we’re empowering more than 20,000 team members across the country to make a difference in their local communities. In July 2021, we launched Clayton Impact®, a program that provides team members with paid volunteer time off so they can support the causes and nonprofit organizations that are meaningful to them.

The program began as an idea from Clayton’s leadership team. They were looking for a way for Clayton to continue to be a force for good, and for team members to be able to truly bring our company values to life.

"Companies have a responsibility to create positive change in the places where their team members live and work," said CEO Kevin Clayton. "As our team members donate their time within their communities, we are helping to model hope and improve the future for many."

As part of the company-wide program, all full-time Clayton team members receive eight hours of paid volunteer time off a year. Since Clayton Impact’s launch in 2021, team members have volunteered over 227,000 hours.

During 2024, we’ve also seen a 68.5% team member participation rate, which means a majority of team members have used at least some of their VTO. According to research by Double the Donation, the average corporate volunteer participation rate is 33% and the participation rate in top-quartile corporate volunteer programs is 66%.

“I think our team members have such giving hearts,” said Sarah Jo Gregory, who helped create Clayton Impact and is the Director of Wellbeing and Impact. “Helping others and doing good was just in our company's DNA before this formal volunteer program. So, right from the start, our team members loved it.”

Early volunteer projects included home repairs for those in need, community beautification and Habitat for Humanity builds. And some of the many causes team members supported in 2024 include:

• 331 Clayton home office team members volunteered with Blount County Habitat for Humanity and donated 1,324 hours to help a mother achieve homeownership.

• 127 Clayton Retail home centers across the country completed service projects for animal shelters, nursing homes and hospitals on Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

• Clayton Addison II in Alabama partnered with the organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build beds for local children in need. In 2024, team members built 509 beds.

• Clayton Home Building Group® team members from Clayton Appalachia and HouseSmart® partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to build a playhouse for an 8-year-old girl with cystic fibrosis.

• 50 Home Building Group team members built and painted 10 dog houses with the Blount County Animal Welfare Society.

• Clayton Connect® team members coordinated a donation relief drive to aid people who were affected by the flooding in western North Carolina. They collected and transported supplies from Clayton Retail partners and home building facilities, and delivered 30,000 pounds of supplies to Swannanoa, a town near Asheville. They also spent a weekend in November distributing supplies and fed an estimated 450 people.

• In February, West Coast Clayton Retail home center managers created blankets for Sacramento Blankets for Sacramento Kids.

“A main message from the beginning [of the Clayton Impact program] to team members was, ‘Use your volunteer time off however you want. Find an organization or a cause that is meaningful to you,'” Sarah Jo said.

Clayton wants to be a force for good by inviting everyone to come together and build a better tomorrow for their communities. Our team members have found innovative ways to do good, and we look forward to seeing the many causes and organizations they will support across the country in the future and the impact that they make.
