Social Responsibility

At Clayton, we strive to be a force for good in the world and that means we seek meaningful opportunities to make a long-term impact. One of the ways we achieve this is by forming strategic partnerships with national philanthropic nonprofits who are experts in meeting needs in the communities where we live and work.
Family Promise is the leading national nonprofit organization addressing family homelessness, which studies have shown can have a devastating impact on children’s mental and physical well-being. Family Promise has close to 200 local Affiliates across the country that serve families through eviction prevention, shelter diversion, temporary shelter, case management, and affordable housing programs. This important work aligns with Clayton’s belief that all families deserve access to quality, stable housing where they can work to build a better future.

Clayton’s Partnership with Family Promise
In 2019, Clayton began a partnership with Family Promise to help families achieve housing stability through an innovative homelessness prevention program, called A Future Begins at Home. Through grants to Family Promise Affiliates across the country, A Future Begins at Home helps families facing housing insecurity stay in their homes through rental assistance, landlord mediation, transportation and childcare support, and other important resources. Affiliates will then provide case management to ensure families understand their finances and have the resources needed to remain stably housed. This support aims to help children avoid the traumas of becoming homeless and ensure these families have access to resources to help them in case of future unexpected expenses.
Since its inception, A Future Begins at Home has prevented more than 43,000 families, including more than 69,000 children, from experiencing the trauma of homelessness. The program has also catalyzed more than $14 million in additional partner funding, generating additional reach and impact for families in need. And over 80 percent of families who receive assistance through A Future Begins at Home have continued to have stable housing in the long term.
A Partnership Milestone
As part of the partnership, Clayton has now donated 20 homes to Family Promise Affiliates, most of which are used as transitional housing. This means that a family stays in the home, typically for 6-18 months, while they work with Family Promise case managers to secure permanent housing and improve their financial wellbeing. This method maximizes the impact of Clayton’s donation because multiple families can stay in the homes over time.
In December, Clayton donated the 20th home to Family Promise of Bell County in Temple, TX, which was founded in 2004.
“It will give families the foundation they need to move toward long-term stability with our ongoing support,” said Rucker Preston, Executive Director of Family Promise of Bell County. “We’re excited to see the impact this home will have on the family moving in and on many more in the years to come.”
Clayton team members also played a key role in helping the donation to be a success, demonstrating their commitment to Clayton’s values. The home was built by Clayton Athens, a home building facility in Athens, TX, and the setup was completed by Clayton Homes of Killeen, including arranging for furniture so that the home was ready to welcome the first family.
"Donating 20 homes shows what’s possible when dedicated teams come together for a common goal," said Kevin Clayton, CEO of Clayton. “We look forward to helping even more families find lasting housing stability, and we deeply appreciate Family Promise’s leadership and the incredible work they do across the country.”

About the Donated Home
The donated home is the Solsbury Hill floor plan from Clayton’s Tempo series, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and 1,140 sq. ft. It also features an all-drywall interior, Craftsman details and energy-efficient features. In addition, the home has roof-mounted solar panels that are projected to produce 40% of its annual energy. This is significant because it will help lower the costs for Family Promise to maintain the home, which in turn will help them support the families staying there.
At Clayton, we know our vision to develop housing innovations that improve lives and build a better tomorrow cannot be achieved alone. And the milestone of donating our 20th home with a national nonprofit like Family Promise shows what’s possible when dedicated organizations come together to achieve a shared goal.
