When you’re deciding on your dream kitchen, choosing a sink might not be top of mind. But the right sink can really enhance your kitchen’s design. We’re sharing a few types to help you choose the best one for your style.

At Clayton, we partner with top home building brands that use beautiful, quality materials, and that includes kitchen fixtures like the sink. When it comes to choosing a sink for your Clayton home, you have a few great options. Below, we talk about the different sinks you can choose from to help you pick one that’s right for you and your home.

Undermount Kitchen Sinks

Like the name suggests, an undermount sink sits underneath the countertop. This type of sink provides a seamless look because the edge is completely hidden, and you can get it as a single or double basin. If you’re thinking of choosing this type of sink for your kitchen, consider:

Pros of an Undermount Sink

  • They provide a seamless look
  • Take up less countertop space
  • Are easier to clean because there is no edge

Cons of an Undermount Sink

  • They are heavy and require a solid surface countertop
  • Take up space in the cabinet below
  • They’re harder to replace
  • The faucet has to be installed in the countertop

Topmount Kitchen Sinks

If an undermount doesn’t work with your countertop, a topmount sink is also a great option. This type of sink, also referred to as a drop-in sink, sits down in the cut area of your countertop. The basin sits underneath the countertop like an undermount sink, but the edge of the sink sits on top.

Pros of a Topmount Sink

  • Easy to install
  • You can easily replace your sink after a few years
  • More affordable

Cons of a Topmount Sink

  • Harder to clean
  • Takes up more countertop space

Farmhouse or Apron Front Sinks

The apron front style sink, most commonly known as a farmhouse sink, is distinguished by its front. Instead of the cabinet facing the front, the sink’s front face is exposed. You often see this style in farmhouse-style homes because of its charming design.

Pros of a Farmhouse Sink

  • Wider and deeper than other sinks
  • Durable
  • Visually appealing

Cons of a Farmhouse Sink

  • Takes up a lot of space
  • Heavy and hard to install

Sink Materials and Colors

The sink type isn’t the only choice you have. The material and color of the sink also play a part in your kitchen’s overall design. Take a look at some of the most common ones below.

Stainless Steel: This is the most popular choice in Clayton homes because of its durability and affordable price compared to other materials. Keep in mind, it scratches more easily than other materials and water spots are more visible, so it’s more difficult to keep clean.

Porcelain: This nonporous material is a low-maintenance option. And the variety of colors and styles means it works in both traditional and modern kitchens. It can handle wear and tear better than most materials, but it can crack and stain with heavy use.

Acrylic: Acrylic, also known as polycarbonate or durable plastic, is another sink material you can get for your Clayton home. It’s lightweight for easy installation and is reinforced with fiberglass and resin to make it durable and stain resistant. However, it’s not as durable as stainless steel and it’s best to not use any abrasive materials to prevent scratch marks.

Single vs. Double-Basin Sinks

When picking out your sink, you can also choose from a single or double basin. Deciding between the two comes down to preference and your dishwashing habits and needs, but here are a few things to keep in mind.
