KANSAS CITY, Kansas, October 14, 2026 – APEX Development Group, Fairlane Contractors, and Clayton CEO Kevin Clayton, joined HUD leaders, policymakers and housing advocates to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Kansas City’s first urban infill project featuring new CrossMod® homes. Several federal and local officials attended the ceremony, including HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary Chris Patterson, Representative Derek Schmidt and Kansas City Mayor Christal E. Watson.
Anticipated to cost under $250,000, this project is transforming underutilized land in established Kansas City neighborhoods, creating the opportunity for residents to buy a new construction home well below the area's current median sale price, which recently hit a record high of $370,000.
These innovative, modern manufactured homes are indistinguishable in design from site-built homes but leverage the efficiencies and cost-savings of factory-built construction. Because they have specific features like a permanent foundation, covered porch and garage, CrossMod homes finance, appraise and appreciate like a traditional home.
“Too many people in Kansas City are finding that homeownership is out of reach for them. This project proves there is another path forward,” said Guy Brown, Fairlane Contractors. “By turning vacant lots into beautiful new homes, we're creating opportunities for people to build a future in the community they know and love while bringing new life to neighborhoods across the area."

The Kansas City project is Clayton’s first urban infill project featuring single-section CrossMod homes since the floor plan was introduced one year ago at HUD's Innovative Housing Showcase. The front-entry, smaller footprint floor plan was designed specifically for narrow infill lots to help expand attainable homeownership in locations where housing supply, efficiency and affordability present unique opportunities for cities.
The Kansas City development demonstrates how innovative housing solutions and builder partnerships can revitalize communities and increase local housing supply, ultimately bringing new homes to existing neighborhoods while making efficient use of otherwise vacant land. Because CrossMod homes are built inside a factory away from weather delays while site work occurs simultaneously, developers can accelerate timelines and streamline the construction process, creating a more scalable approach to delivering housing where it's needed most.
“What excites me most about this development is what these homes will mean for the families who will live in them,” said Colt Davis, Chief Operating Officer, Clayton Home Building Group and President, Clayton Manufacturing. “This Kansas City initiative shows that with the right partnerships and innovative homes, we can create new opportunities for families to put down roots, build a future and take that important step toward owning a home. It's also a chance to help make better use of available land and bring new life to neighborhoods that have so much potential.”
