Gas or Electric: Which Stove Type is Right for You?

Are you trying to decide what type of stove is right for you? Check out some pros and cons to decide which type of appliance is right for your home.

Planning for your dream kitchen is exciting if you are someone who likes to cook meals in style. You will have several home features to choose from as you browse new home kitchen options and styles. For example, there are two different types of stoves to choose from in terms of how they heat your food.

When you are choosing your dream home, you may get to choose between a gas or electric stovetop. Both stovetop types have their benefits, cons and different ways to be cleaned. Check out what you need to know about choosing between a gas or electric stove as you design the kitchen of your dreams.

What is the difference between a range and a cooktop?

Sometimes, what people typically refer to as the “stove” or “oven” is actually the range. Stove and range are often used interchangeably, but a range is the entire unit that contains both the stovetop (often referred to as just the stove), or cooktop, area and the oven which is the bottom area of the range.

What is the difference between a gas and electric stovetop?

Gas stoves and electric stoves differ in how they heat. Gas stoves have a burner assembly that is attached to a small gas valve which is connected to the main gas line¹

Electric stoves usually have coils that heat up when the control knobs are turned on, which creates electricity to move into the coils that heat the stovetop and oven. The electric stoves can have either coil burners that are exposed or radiant burners that are covered by smooth glass stovetops.  Smooth stove tops are sleek and modern for home buyers looking for a more updated look.²

How to Decide Which Stove is Best for You

When deciding between a gas and electric cooktop, you may often stick to whichever option your family had in your childhood home. However, you can always decide to switch   to either stove type from the one you’re used to.

When choosing your stovetop, keep in mind the energy costs associated with each choice, the style you want and the price of the stove so that you can stay within your budget. You may even want to consider size and number of burners if you will be cooking for a large family. Check out these pros and cons of gas and electric stoves to decide which is right for you

How to Take Care of Gas and Electric Stoves

Since the two stove types operate differently, they must be cleaned differently. Cooking can be messy with food spilling or pots boiling over. Properly cleaning your stove will help it continue to look beautiful and work efficiently. Check out how to clean your stove by type.

How to Clean Gas Stovetops

  • Make sure your stovetop is off and not producing any heat.
  • Fill your sink with hot water and add up to 2 tablespoons of dish detergent.
  • Carefully remove grates and reflector bowls from the gas range and soak them in hot water for up to 20 minutes.
  • Wipe grates and burners with a soft cloth.
  • Rinse with clean water and wipe dry.³
  • If there is dried food on the surface, scrape the food off with a plastic knife or spatula and wipe away the remains with a damp washcloth. Do not use metal scrapers because they can scratch the stovetop.

How to Clean an Electric Stove with Coil Burners

  • Make sure your stovetop is off and not producing any heat.
  • Remove the coiled burners.
  • Use mild dish soap and water with a soft cloth to remove residue.
  • If your stove has removeable drip pans, remove them and clean them by wiping them down with a damp cloth.⁴

How to Clean a Smooth Top Electric Cooktop

  • Make sure the stovetop is off and no longer producing any heat.
  • Using wet paper towels, wipe down the range surface to remove dried food.
  • Dry any moisture leftover from cleaning with a dry paper towel.
  • If approved by the stove’s manufacturer, spray a degreaser over the surface and wipe the surface clean with paper towels.x⁵

No matter which stovetop type you have, you can maintain your stove by wiping it down after every time you cook. Just make sure the stove is completely off and no longer producing heat. You should also check with your stove’s manufacturer on how to properly clean your specific stove type.

Choosing a cooktop that complements your family’s needs will help make the kitchen of your dreams that much better. As you consider what options you want in your new manufactured home kitchen, think about other kitchen features and upgrades that can improve your home efficiency and allow you to personalize your new home.
